5 Tips to Conquer First-Day-of-School Nerves
The first day of school is rapidly approaching, and I know that a lot of you might be feeling nervous for it. First-day jitters can be so real, whether you’re starting at a new school or just heading back after a summer of being gone. Here are some tips you can follow to tackle those nerves that come from the first day of school.
Routines
Preparing the night before can help with your nerves. Make sure your bag is packed so you’re not running around looking for your things at the last minute. Pick out your outfit and you could even decide on what makeup look and hairstyle you want to have in order to complete the look and feel confident walking into school. Go to sleep on time or maybe even a bit early to wake up rested and ready for the day.
You also want to start the day off calmly, as being frazzled increases your stress and anxiety about what is to come. Since night and morning routines are connected, here are the links to my morning and night routine pages, where you can read and get more detailed ideas.
Involvement
Arrive to school a bit earlier than you actually have to be there so you can scope out the scene and avoid feeling rushed. You’ll have time to find the friends you already have and/or get to know new people before classes start.
Throughout the school day, you should be trying to make conversation with enough people to find at least one person who has the same lunch time as you so you know you have someone to sit with— I find that one of the biggest nerve issues is people being worried about who to sit with at lunch, so if you can find someone before lunch starts, you’re taking a huge weight off your shoulders.
If you don’t find anyone, don’t worry! Don’t be shy to ask to sit with a small group or someone sitting alone. nearly everyone is open to making friends for the first few days, so people are very likely to say yes.
In general, you should be make basic conversation to make friends. even if you don’t become close friends with anyone straight away, starting the school year with a friendly and open reputation is very helpful later on.
Set Goals
Another thing you can do to help you with first day of school nerves is set small goals for a sense of accomplishment. You can make it a goal to try and introduce yourself to one new person in each class, or volunteer to go first during the icebreakers— on the line of icebreakers, have some interesting topics you can talk about so your mind doesn’t go blank when asked. often times, you’re asked about what activities you did that summer, or you play 2 Truths and a Lie or something like that.
Reduce Anxiety
If you’re feeling particularly anxious about going to school, you can focus on breathing techniques meant to calm you down, such as inhaling and holding your breath for a few moments before releasing over an extended period of time. You could also bring something small such as a bracelet, necklace, fidget toy or stress ball, and more. These items can provide a sense of comfort and grounding during the day.
You can also even limit social media use leading up to and on the first few days of school, if you’re worried about comparing yourself to people having amazing or horrific days. You should focus on your own experiences. If needed, you can even do an “alter ego” sort of thing and affirm to yourself that at least when you’re in school, you’re confident and will easily make many friends. Visualize having a successful day so it feels more achievable. If you don’t believe it’s possible, you will hold yourself back. You must believe in yourself.
Reflection
At the end of the school day and week, you should reflect on how it went. Maybe something that seemed really embarrassing at the moment overall wasn’t that big of a deal, or maybe there was someone you were trying to talk to so you wouldn’t feel lonely and you’re kind of feeling like you’re just not meshing well, and there could be someone else you could pivot your attention to. Maybe you have a classmate who seems really interested in a topic and you want to take time to learn a bit more about it so you could have a conversation about it the next time you see them.
Pay attention to the good, bad, and the awkward that happened, and use those reflections to make sure the rest of the school year goes well. be kind to yourself if things don’t go perfectly— life can be a little messy at parts, so focus on adjusting well. Remember that everyone feels a little nervous for their first days back at school, even if they don’t seem to be showing it— every year is a new experience for everyone. Don’t forget, the first day is just that: the first day. There’s plenty of time to find your rhythm, make new friends, and get comfortable. And no matter how the first couple days pan out, everything will be okay in the end. You’ve got this.
