7 Mistakes All Students Should Avoid for the School Year
Hello everyone! I know that you don’t want to struggle during the upcoming school year- maybe it’s your first time going into a new level of education, or maybe you’re trying to improve from the experiences you had last year.
Either way, I’m going to share some mistakes that you’re going to want to avoid making during the upcoming school year. So let’s get into it!
Procrastination
The first mistake is one that everyone struggles with, and that’s procrastination and bad time management. Everyone has been in a position where we keep putting off tasks we don’t want to do until the deadline looms over us and we do the work in a panic.
Even if you believe yourself to be someone who works better under that pressure, procrastination is still not ideal as nearing the deadline can be very stressful and it’s not a good idea to put your body under that stress. so please, manage your schedule well to make sure you’re getting all your work done without worrying about falling behind.
Not Setting Boundaries
Not setting boundaries is another mistake. There are times in your life where you may have so many responsibilities and it can be so overwhelming.
When balancing your academics, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments, it’s crucial to establish clear limits to protect your time and well-being. If you don’t, and end up taking on more tasks than you can manage, you end up burning yourself out due to overcommitting and therefore end up dropping the ball on all your activities.
Don’t be afraid to decline requests or ask your teachers for extensions— more often than not, people want to work with you so that everyone can be happy.
If you are someone who struggles with the idea of turning people down, the book “The Art of Saying No” by Damon Zahariades (affilate link!) is a good introduction into the possibility.
Skipping Class or Your Work
Avoid skipping classes or the school day. I know some people do this because they think it’s cool or they feel too anxious about something to want to go in. Regardless of the reason, I urge you to attend unless you legitimately can’t.
When you skip, you’re risking being left out of your schoolwork and thus falling behind— this has happened to me a few times, and the only reason why I didn’t attend was because I wasn’t feeling well. I don’t understand why you would purposefully make school more difficult for you than it already can be.
Also, try your best to stay on top of assignments so you don’t accidentally skip one, as falling behind also happens in that aspect and it becomes a snowball of work as you try to catch up on old assignments while teachers still keep creating new ones.
Not Asking For Help
This mistake is something i really wish I had learned earlier, and it’s not asking for help. If you’re struggling in a class, please see your teacher for help. It can be very intimating to admit to a teacher that you’re having trouble— you can even send them a quick email if you can’t manage to do it in person— but you need to reach out to avoid the stress and tears.
When reaching out, be clear with what topic, assignment, or concept you find challenging, and show that you’ve taken initiative to solve the problem on your own, and accept, learn from, and apply the feedback you are given.
As a side note, asking for help can actually benefit you in the future as you show your teacher that you put time and effort into doing the work, clearly putting you in a positive light. This means that if you’re at the cusp of a letter grade, they might be willing to give you a few extra points, or they might be wiling to write you a really good letter of recommendation if you need it.
Be Organized
You need to try being organized and avoid distractions. keep track of all your assignments and upcoming tests so you aren’t surprised by them and can study accordingly. when studying, try to create a distraction-free, organized, and productive zone so you can focus on getting the job done easily.
Missing School Activities
Not getting involved in school activities is also another issue. I understand if you cant afford the time, money, or energy to go to dances or sport games, but at least try to be involved a little bit to gain a sense of community. participate in spirit week outfits or school pep rallies— things like that. You have to attend school no matter what so at least try to make some part of it enjoyable.
Poor Studying
The last mistake for today will be having bad note-taking and/or studying methods. These methods need to be effective in order to properly retain information and be able to relay that for an exam or project.
Your notes need to be clear and easy for you to look back on and understand what you had written— you can look up some note-taking techniques if you’d like, but do be sure to not it more complex than it has to be.
When studying, use whatever methods work best for you as long as you end up actually remembering the material— remember, you will need to know the information again for your midterms and finals, so try and make it a little easier to refresh your knowledge.
Conclusion
Avoiding these mistakes is going to make your academic journey so much easier, so I hope you’ll follow the advice given!
